This summer, GSUSA representatives visited GSNI’s “My Best Elf Self” camp at Baker Community Center in St. Charles to see how girls enjoyed using Healthy Habits, a component of the It’s Your Planet—Love It! Journey. The cameras were rolling as girls worked on WOW! Wonders of Water and learned about staying healthy throughout their lives.
Thanks to a generous grant from Cadence Health System, nearly 50 girls were able to participate in the week-long program this past June. Local experts from the community shared their knowledge with the girls by teaching them fun ways to stay healthy. GSNI Preferred Partner, Nancy May of Yoga from the Heart, taught girls the importance of relaxing for a healthy body in a yoga workshop. Karin Podolski from Cadence Health helped girls learn about "go, slow, and whoa" foods through a song and dance. The girls also crafted their own water bottle cozies out of funky colored socks!
Brownie campers traveled to the Hickory Knolls Nature Center in St. Charles where they explored the trails and participated in fun activities where they learned how the water cycle works. All campers visited Chicago to spend an afternoon at Journey World where they danced their way to a healthier self. The week culminated with the girls completing their Journey Take Action project that focused on water conservation or healthy habits.
The girls worked in teams to create and put their project into action. From PSAs about conserving water, to recipe books filled with the girls' favorite healthy meals and snacks to share, and even some veggie-tastic songs, campers demonstrated great ways of working together! Each group performed and filmed their Take Action project so they could share it with others and spread the word about saving water and staying healthy!
